Extra Credit

1. Explain what happened to the man that was killed by the subway and how the photographer was able to take the photo?  A man who had been shoved onto the tracks of an unidentified assailant was ran over by a New York sub way. And the photographer said that he took out his camera and took pictures of the mans final moments trying to alert the coming train driver with his flash.

2. why did the photographer say he took the photo?
He was trying to alert the train driver with the flash of his camera.
3. Do you think the photographer should have took the photo?
No, I do not  think he should of took this photo.
4. Do you think the photographer did the best thing he could have done in this situation? Why or why not? No I do not think the photographer did the best thing he could have done in this situation. Because he could of helped by trying to pull the man up from the ledge instead of just standing there and taking a picture.

5. Do you agree or disagree with the decision to run the photo on the first page of the New York Post? Explain why or why not. I disagree with the decision to run the photo on the first page of the New York Post.  Because its disrespectful to the person that died and to his family, by just putting it out to the public without his families consent.

6. What is more important to a photojournalist, capturing images of life as it happens or stopping bad things from happenings? Why or why not.
Stoping bad things from happening. Because its the right thing to do.
7. Do you think it is ever ethnically acceptable for a photographer to involve himself/herself in a situation that he or she photographs? Explain why or why not.
No I do not think its ethnically acceptable for a photographer to involve himself/herself in a situation the he or she photographs. Because if its a bad situation they should either help or stay out of it in my opinion.
8. Should photojournalist always avoid influencing events as they happen? Explain your answer.
Yes. Because they shouldn't stand there and just take a picture they should just avoid its the better thing to do.
9. After reading the responses from the professional photographers, what stands out as the most appropriate response for a photographer to this situation.

professor of photojournalism at the University of Florida and Pulitzer Prize winner for feature photography:
In truth, nobody can say whether the photographer could have safely rescued the victim. If so, we hope he would have done the right thing and rushed toward him first, rather than toward his camera. My belief is that we have to give the photographer the benefit of the doubt. It's almost important to ask whether other bystanders could have safely helped, too?
The blame in this controversy lies directly with the New York Post for publishing such a callous, crude and truly tasteless headline while at the same time wrongly splashing the tragedy on the front page.

Lytro Warm-up & Ethics in Fashion photography

1. What did you see happen when you clicked on the photo?
When you click on the blurry parts of the photo it clears up for any part of the photo that you click on.

2. How does this camera work?
I think its just a feature that the camera has but I really have no idea how it works..

3. What do you think a photographer would have to know about to take of photo ( remember its a point-and-shoot, so its full manual mode, what do you need to know about)
I think you really don't have to know anything about photography to take a good picture with this camera just because the camera really does all the work.

4. Is it worth the money?
I think its worth the money I wouldn't personally buy it but for someone who is a beginner at taking pictures and like to take pictures I think this would be a great camera for them.

Fashion:

1. List the changes that were made to the models face in the computer.
They made her lips bigger widened her forehead and her eyes, stretched out her neck fixed her eyebrows and the shape of her face changed.

2. Is it ethnically acceptable to change a persons appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not? Its not ethnically acceptable, but its a business I'm pretty sure they didn't mean to hurt anybody they just simply made someone look better.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethnically wrong to do this type of manipulation? Yes but I really think they didn't did something wrong all they really did was put make up and fixed her hair and made her just look better but its not a natural beauty.

4. What types of changes are ok, and what aren't ?
I think some changes that are ok, are hair and make up.
5. Explain what you think the difference are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
Fashion photography is fake its just models covered in make up and having their photos photo shopped to make the photo look better and photo journalism does use photo shop but it doesn't go all out like fashion photography.

6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each? It makes people think twice if its real or not or if this photo has just been photoshopped so people are just not taking real pictures anymore.

Self Portrait and Portraits Part II

The Best Two Tips:

1 - If you’re taking photos in a studio, use a mannequin for light testing: Much easier than guesstimating!

Read more at http://www.pixiq.com/article/self-portraits#YlqkwKpM6dtYmYtm.99

10 - Have fun with it. Be sexy. Be yourself. Be awesome. Be different. Be creative. Whatever you do, have fun with it. That’s part of the point, after all.

Environmental Portraits:

Environmental Portrait #1.
I like this photo because I think theres not a lot of background to show and it just focuses on the model which is the girl posing for the picture.
Environmental Portrait #2.
I like this photo mostly because of the smoke, I think it makes the photo look better with something other than the model posing in the picture and this is just a good way to get a different look at the subject.

Self Portraits:

I like this photo because it looks like clouds or smoke or something? I think it just makes the the photo look better how it shows it coming out of his mouth.

I like this photo mostly because it looks digital I guess... But I think without this feature the photo would look really boring and just plain so this just enhances the picture and makes it look better.

Plan for my Portrait assignment:

I will probably shoot a friend of mine or family member. I will try different angles or change the lighting to make the picture look better. I will most likely take the picture outside or inside I have not decided yet.

Abandoned Theme Parks

1. I would like to go to the six flags in New Orleans. I would want to go there because it went through 7ft. water and 70-80% was destroyed by hurricane Katrina so everything is basically destroyed and abandoned. But what makes me want to go there more is that it says in the article to be careful if you go because people have been handcuffed, driven off the promises, and had their camera film destroyed. But a lot of people that went there have been able to enter with no problems and walk out so it makes me eager to go to this amusement park.

Academic Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?
Some challenges that I thought made taking the pictures harder were that not really any of the classes were doing anything but taking notes and test so it was hard to work with it.

2. What technical aspects of photography of the assignment in general did you find yourself thinking about the most?
Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly?
To not  be visible and not to distract the student it was like I wasn't there and Just took all the pictures i needed to and than I left.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
I would pick my pictures better instead of shooting kind of wildly but just take pictures that you know I would follow the subject.

4. What things would you do the same?
I would use all the same methods like not being visible and distracting students for example.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
Simplicity would definitely be the easiest picture for me to take or avoiding mergers.

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
I think the hardest for me would be framing because their not just one way to take the picture.

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?
I know all the rules there is not one rule that I don't know but the only hard part for me is when we are going out taking the pictures its hard for me to simplicity  or framing and other rules.

Academic Shoot

Lines

I followed the rule its just a little hard to see, Because I saw the lines from the book shelves and with all the students in the background. It really isn't clear for people to see the subject but only because a lot of the classrooms didn't give me a lot to work with. What I could of done differently is zoom in more with the camera focusing on the book shelves instead of all of the students and it might of been a better picture.

Simplicity:

I think I followed the rule really well because the background is just there it doesn't distract the viewer from the main idea. I believe the subject is clear if people would look at it, only because  people will know why I took this picture because the main point is clear.

Rule Of Thirds:

I followed the subject by leaving space in front of the reader and its not all focused on him even though he is in the middle of the picture. So I believe i followed the subject good and made it clear because of those reasons.

Balance:

I do feel like I followed the rule because of how the chairs are pushed into the tables and form rectangles and squares. But the subject isn't really clear what I could of done better is focus more on the table and chairs than the rest of the people in the background.

Framing:

I think I followed the rule because I have the model looking into the background of the picture so that its just not focused on the model and because of that I feel like the subject is clear and he's just in the picture. But I could of done better by zooming in on the model more and put the background in just a lot more clear.

Avoiding Mergers:

I followed the rule probably better than all of the pictures than I took, and this might be my best picture. But I think that it is clear to see if this is a avoiding mergers picture because one of the teachers are cut in half and one of the students are cut out of the picture not entirely though.

Academic Shoot Preview

Best Story:

I think this picture tells me the best story because it has students helping the homeless and you can just look at the picture and tell the whole story. You can also see the students getting the food ready for the homeless while they form a single file line and wait for there food.

Action or Emotion:

This photo has a little bit of each action and emotion. These two students are doing some sort of lab as something explodes and that would be the action. And the emotion is the look on their face as something explodes in their container. The girl in red has a really surprised and amazed face, and the girl in the grey looks like she is just laughing at the look on her lab partners face.

Filling the frame:

The frame is completely filled with people, even though some people in this picture have their bodies and some of the peoples arms are just cut entirely out of the picture. But I think this picture does have the most interesting stuff in it cause it just looks like their putting their hands in something thats producing fog and and its a group of people and it just suck out compared to all of the rest of the pictures.

Academics and Community Service:

Picture that I chose-"Drop the Bass"
1. Why did you pick this photo?
I picked this photo because it looked really cool to me, because the girl dropped some paint or ink I have no idea and it just looked crazy while it splashes and the photographer caught this photo at the right time.
2. What rules of photography are evident in the photo?
The rule of photography is simplicity for this photo.

Shooting Academics:

1. I would go to some of the science classes on a day were their doing a lab because usually thats where  you can get the most interesting and action filled pictures and also emotions.
2. Someones chemistry class because I know chemistry is about atomic levels, atoms and molecules and stuff like that so they probably do a lot of labs.
3. I would go to the place that I was most interested in and somewhere I would know to take fun and exciting pictures.

Composition 9/11

Simplicity:

The two buildings and the explosion between
both of them improve the photos visual simplicity. And
there is no complicated backgrounds and its slightly off centered.

Lines:

You can see the repetitive lines with the building and also the smoke draw the viewers attention with vertical lines.

Rule of thirds:

There is really good subject control in this picture and it gives the model a definite path to go to within the picture.

Balance:

Unusual and Interesting Photos

Part 1.

1.  My reaction to his work is confused? I like it Just have no idea how he did it it looks really cool and creative I'm just confused.
2.  I think he made these photos by taking a picture of a building and took another and kept taking multiple pictures and somehow combined the pictures to make it look like its combined.
3.  I think a good picture like these would be of the statue of liberty and just do whatever the photographer did. And the statue of liberty is somewhere in New York so if you live in New York than it would be easy to get to.

Part 2.

Sports Action:

1.  I picked this photo because I like the black and white feature, and with the lights in the back as he beats Brock Lesnar in a Heavy weight fight.
2. Sports action.
3. Sports photo journalist of the year.
4. It caught my eye was that I knew this fighter and I actually saw the paper view that he fought in this fight but I think the black and white feature caught my eye because I love black and white pictures .
5. I think the judges didn't think this was one of the very best sports photos they have seen, its actually pretty good so they chose it because its really not a bad picture its really original and thats one of the reasons I like it.
6. He probably had to go next to the ring(octagon) and take the picture while he could get the fighter in a good position for a picture.

Part 3.

1."As has been said before, that smile says a lot about the connection between the painter and the subject."
"Blake can teach photographers a lot about balancing inspiration and technique."
"What this can teach photographers is never stop looking for the right angle to take a photo."

4. Who ever drew this picture followed the same concept of the old one but they made it their own by putting a background with it to make it look different.
5. Surrealism affected me because its like visual arts and I'm interested in that style of art.

National Geographic Warm-up/ Photo manipulation and Ethics

2. This was my favorite picture because it just looks like a crazy photo the colors look really good and the picture is really clear. But the best part for me is the stars above the clouds and the lightning hitting the tornado. Also I like how its at night just because of the stars it sets the whole picture up

3. I would go to the University of Texas football stadium and take a birds eye view of the whole stadium and I would submit it to the photo contest.

                                Photo Manipulation and Ethics:

A.  Summarize the main points of the story in 1-4 sentences.
On April 1st photographer Menahem Kahana to a picture and it ended up being in the Jewish newspaper. And someone used Adobe photo shop removed the female misters and replaced them with two men to make a all male cabinet. But in Los Angeles times photographer got fired, because he combined elements of a British soldier and because of that it cost him his job.

B. Explain why you think this type of photo editing is unethical or acceptable.
I think photo editing is acceptable if you use your own picture but its unethical if you use someones photo without asking for permission to use the photo or photo edit the picture.

 A.  I think these two pictures are the most unethical because its making the u.s soldier look like hes pointing the gun and threatening the people.

B. I think the first picture is the most unethical because it doesn't look like the soldier is pointing the gun at the civilians and the guy with his son. when the photo shopped picture is just a picture of the soldier pointing the gun at the father and his son with the civilians in the back.
